Gapped Text is Part 6 of the Reading and Use of English paper in Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE). Some paragraphs are removed from an article and jumbled after it, and you decide which paragraph fits each gap. One paragraph is extra and does not fit any gap. It tests how well you follow the structure and development of a text. This post gives you 10 Cambridge C2 Proficiency Gapped Text practice passages with answers. Every answer comes with a short note that explains why the paragraph fits. Read each article first, then open the answer for each gap to check your work.

Passage 1

Where a Poem Ends on the Page

Publishing editor Nessa Brill finds that preserving a line break requires interpretation, not mechanical loyalty.

The final line of Arlen Rowan's poem consists of one word, 'still', placed alone near the foot of a wide manuscript page. In the narrow paperback planned by Tern House Press, the previous line will not fit. On a phone, its length changes with screen size. Publishing editor Nessa Brill rejects the comforting instruction to preserve the poet's line breaks exactly. Exact preservation is impossible until someone decides what, in each break, requires preserving.

Those pressures are not always visible in the finished poem. A line may end where thought turns, where breath is invited, or simply where a notebook ran out of space. Treating all three as sacred can preserve an accident while damaging a deliberate pause.

[Gap 2]

The recording complicated rather than settled the case. Rowan paused after 'still' in one reading but carried straight through it in another. Performance showed that the word could bear isolation; it did not prove that the page must isolate it every time. Brill treated voice as evidence of possibility, not an instruction track.

[Gap 3]

Permission to revise did not remove responsibility from the editor. A poet may remember intention imperfectly, and a late preference can make an earlier version look more stable than it was. Brill recorded which breaks changed, why they changed and which witnesses supported the decision.

[Gap 4]

The small indent carries an argument. It tells a reader that the second visual line continues the first poetic line, preserving the distinction between a chosen break and one imposed by the page. Without it, the narrow edition would silently add pauses the poem never made.

[Gap 5]

Neither version is neutral. Locking shape can force tiny type or horizontal scrolling, while free reflow can detach isolated words and stanza spaces from their effects. The publisher states which mode is active instead of presenting technical behaviour as though it were the poem itself.

[Gap 6]

The spoken rendering exposed a different ambiguity. A visual gap can signal silence, a change of speaker or merely a wider field of attention; translating all three into one long pause would flatten the poem. Brief introductions were used only where layout supplied information unavailable from syntax and voice.

[Gap 7]

When the book appeared, 'still' remained alone in print but joined the preceding phrase on small screens, where a subtle marker retained the hesitation. Neither version reproduced the manuscript. With the record of decisions, however, they preserved something more useful than a photograph of it: an accountable interpretation.

Paragraphs to choose from

A. For the narrow paperback, Brill used a hanging indent when a long poetic line had to wrap. The continuation began beneath the text rather than at the normal margin, and extra spacing was reserved for breaks supported by the manuscript, revisions or a clear syntactic turn.

B. Brill begins by classifying competing pressures. She asks whether a break controls syntax, rhythm, visual emphasis or several at once, then distinguishes that work from limits of paper and type. Only after this diagnosis does she discuss page width with the poet.

F. Every format decision entered a versioned record containing the source consulted, the feature at risk and the compromise adopted. Future editions could recover the reasoning rather than inheriting a layout whose accidental and deliberate features had become indistinguishable.

The Frame That Had to Disappear

At Framewise Studio, clients often begin by choosing a moulding they like. Framer Rafi Dren postpones that choice. A frame must support an object, negotiate wall and light, and establish an edge around the image. If it announces itself independently in the sample corner, it may fail once the complete picture enters a room. Dren says invisibility is not absence but a relationship that holds.
