Duolingo English Testの写真に関する問題を攻略する９つのポイント

Duolingo English Testでは写真を見て口頭で答えるものと、筆記で答える問題の２つが存在し、どちらもProduction(発信力）のスコアに加算されようになっています。ちなみに、Productionは一番点が取りにくく、苦手とする人が多くなっています。

そのようなProduction(発信力）に関する問題の中でも、写真を見て答えるタイプの問題は比較的かんたんにスコアが伸ばせます。この記事ではスコアを伸ばすコツを一つ一つ紹介するので、ぜひ最後まで読んでみて下さい！

写真を見て口頭で答える問題とは？

このタイプの問題は以下のような形式で主題されます。

録音が始める前に、２０秒間の準備時間が与えられた後、９０秒間以内に写真に何が写っているのかを答える形式となっています。

たった一度しか録音できません！なのでもし間違ったり、行き詰まってしまっても落ち着いてしゃべり続けるようにして下さい。

ちなみに、テストを通じてたった一題しか出されません。

写真を見て筆記で答える問題とは？

このタイプの問題は以下のような形式で主題されます。

口頭で答える問題とはちがい、タイマーがスタートする前の準備時間はないので注意して下さい。６０秒の短い時間内に筆記で答えなければいけません。

また、１回だけでなくテストを通して３回を出題されるのもスピーキング問題と異なる点となっています。

9つの攻略法

1. まず始めに写真をよく観察する

実際の写真は小さく見づらくなっています。すばやく細部まで見れるように練習しましょう。

2. 特に文法に気をつける

単純な文法の間違いはスコアに大きく影響してくるので、書く量を意識しながらも文法の間違いには細心の注意を払って下さい。

3. 様々な文章構造が使えるようにする

文章構造を変えることが、より高度な文法を使うために必要と必要となってきます。

例えば、"I see"や"There is"などの主語、述語だけの簡単な文章をついつい書きがちでず。このような文章構造だけでは、文法の難しさという観点でスコアが上がりにくくなってしまいます。

簡単な文章だけでも、接続詞を使うことで、比較的簡単に文章構造をより複雑にする事ができます。さらに、接続詞の使用は語彙の洗練度、多様性という点からもよりポイントが高くなってきます。

ここでは、主な接続詞を例文と共にリストアップしてみました。

  • And: I like ice cream, and I like cake.
  • But: I like cake, but I don’t like chocolate.
  • So: I want to be successful, so I work hard.
  • Yet: The test was difficult, yet I passed.
  • However: We want to get pizza. However, the restaurant is closed today.
  • Which: We played soccer, which is my favorite sport.
  • Because: I’m tired because I played 2 soccer matches yesterday.
  • Therefore: I didn’t study for the test. Therefore, I got a bad score.
  • Moreover: I like walking to school because I get some exercise. Moreover, I get to spend more time outside.
  • In fact: I love the beach. In fact, it’s my favorite place in the world.
  • For example: There are many great cities in the world. For example, Paris has great food and museums.
  • First, second, third: I prefer the mountains to the beach. First, the mountains are closer to my house. Second, there are fewer people in the mountains. Third, the air is cleaner.
  • In addition to: Learning new languages opens up many doors in addition to being fun to learn.

ただ単に接続詞を使えばいいというものではなく、ふさわしい接続詞を正しく使うことが重要になってきます。

日本語の翻訳をしっかりと覚えて、時間制限がある中でもしっかりと使えるようにしておいて下さい！

4. 同義語を使いこなす

同義語を使って同じ単語の使用を避けることが語彙の洗練度や多様性の観点から重要になってきます。

以下によく使われる言葉の同義語を集めてみました。

Good（良い）

  • Great: “good”よりも度合いが高いです。
  • Terrific:  “great”よりもさらに強めの表現です。
  • Tasty: 食べ物に関しては“good” よりも“tasty”の方が好ましいです。
  • Enjoyable: 経験について語る時は“good”の代わりに“enjoyable”を使ってみて下さい。

Bad（悪い）

  • Terrible: “bad”よりも度合いが強いです
  • Miserable: “terrible”よりも強めの表現です。
  • Unpleasant: 経験について語る時は“bad”の代わりに“unpleasant” を使ってみて下さい。

Important（重要）

  • Noteworthy: 知っておいた方がいいという意味合いがでできます。
  • Prominent: 有名な人や会社について語るときによく使われます。
  • Crucial, essential, critical: どれも特定のアイディアの重要性を述べるときに使われます。

Like（好き）

  • Love: “like”よりも度合いが強いです。
  • Adore: “love”よりもさらに強めの表現です。
  • Enjoy: 食べ物、場所や経験についての場合は“enjoy”が使えることが多いです。

Small（小さい）

  • Tiny: “small”よりも小さい意味合いが強いです。
  • Insignificant: 重要度が低いと伝える場合には“insignificant” を使ってみて下さい。

Large（大きい）

  • Huge: “large”よりもさらに大きいという意味合いが強くなってきます。
  • Enormous: 同じく“large”よりも大きい事が強調されます。
  • Sizable: ほぼ“large”と同じ意味合いになってきます。

5. とにかく書き続ける、又はしゃべり続ける

回答の長さはDuolingo English Testにおいて重要になってくるポイントの一つです。公式には最低１文書くこと、又は３０秒間しゃべることとなっていますが、回答の長さは長ければ長いほど点が高くなってきます。（ただし、回答が長ければ長いほどミスも多くなってきますので、やみくもに書けばいいという事でもないので気をつけて下さい）

各問題はそれぞれ時間制限が別々に設けられています。１つの問題を早く解けば、他の問題により長く時間が割けれる訳ではないので、時間制限めいいっぱいまで回答するようにして下さい。

筆記で答える問題では、最低でも３０語程度は書くようにして下さい。

6. “5 W” で文章を構成する

Duolingoによると写真に関する問題では、「単に写真に写っている物や人を述べるだけでは不十分（参照）」とされています。

国語の授業で習ったように、文章に深みを出すためには5 Wを使って述べるのがポイントです。

  1. What （写真に何が写っているのか）
  2. Who （誰が何をしているのか）
  3. Where （写真はどこで撮られているのか）
  4. When （写真はいつ撮られたのか）
  5. Why （なぜ特定の行為をしているのか）

このように５Wを全てふまえて答えようとすれば、自然と書く量が増え高得点が狙えます。

☝️ 無理やり５Wの全てを答える必要はありません。あくまで答えやすくするためのヒントとして意識するようにして下さい。

それでは、少し例題を使ってどのように５Wを使うのか見ていきましょう。

  1. What （写真に何が写っているのか）? ⇒ A man and a boy are walking down the sidewalk.
  2. Who （誰が何をしているのか）? =>  The two are having a conversation. The man is smiling.
  3. Where （写真はどこで撮られているのか）? ⇒ They are on a sidewalk in a town or a city.
  4. When（写真はいつ撮られたのか）? ⇒ They boy has a backpack, while the man has a satchel. Perhaps it is the morning and the man is going to work and the boy is going to school. There are leaves on the ground and they’re wearing sweaters, so it appears to be autumn.
  5. Why （なぜ特定の行為をしているのか）? ⇒ Perhaps the man is the boy’s father, so he is dropping his son off at school on his way to work.

これらをつなぎ合わせると以下のような回答になります。

In this photo, there are 2 people walking down the sidewalk, a man and a boy. They are having a conversation and appear to be having a good time, because the man is smiling. It appears to be autumn because they are wearing sweaters and there are leaves on the ground. Both have bags. The man has a satchel while the boy has a backpack. Perhaps the man is the boy’s father, and he is dropping his son off at school on his way to work.

7. 筆記で答える問題では、見直しをする時間を残すようにする

文章を書くという事は書く作業と編集する作業の２つの別々の作業から成り立ちます。

まず書きたいことをひたすら書いて、見直しをして間違いをなくす方が、２つの作業を同時にしようとするよりも効率的です。

だいたい５０秒かけて書いて、１０秒で見直すようにすると良いでしょう。

見直しをする時は、全ての間違いを無くそうとせず、誤字脱字などの比較的わかりやすい間違いを優先して直すようにして下さい。

8. スピーキング問題では、ゆっくりと発音に気をつけて答える

緊張している時は、ついつい早口になりがちです。ゆっくりと喋るように気をつける事で、自然と発音の明瞭度を上げることができます。こうすることで、流暢さやアクセントの正しさに関する得点が高くなってきます。

またゆっくりと話す事で、時間制限めいいっぱいまで話し続けやすくもなります。

9. 練習して改善点を指摘してもらう

やみくもに練習しても、なかなか得点アップには繋がりづらいです。しっかりと具体的な改善点を理解して、初めて効果的な練習と言えるでしょう。

それでは実際に写真に関する問題の例題６問を見ていきたいと思います。解答例は全て大体１３０から１６０点台の高得点となっています。（なおこれらの例題はアルノから参照しています。）

In this photo, I see a picture of a man wearing a mask. He is on the sidewalk and all around him people are walking. Everyone appears to be wearing masks as well, so this could be a picture taken during the Covid-19 pandemic. The man’s mask is amusing because it makes him look like a shark that has a big smile. Additionally, the man has big, curly hair, and he is wearing glasses and a tee shirt.

In this photo, there is a teenage girl lighting candles in a slice of cake. Instead of using a match or a lighter, she is using another candle, which is a clever method. There is another hand in the photo holding a candle, and it looks like this person is waiting for the teenager to finish lighting the candles on her side. Presumably, they are celebrating someone’s birthday.

This photo shows a small, cute animal in a tree. I believe that the animal depicted is a red panda, although I’m not sure. It could be another kind of mammal, but one that I don’t believe is native to North America, where I live. The animal seems scared because it is cowering against the branch, like it is trying to hide from a predator.

I see in this photo a musician, specifically a rock star. He is playing a yellow guitar and singing into a microphone. Behind him is another musician who appears to be playing another guitar, or maybe a bass guitar. The other musician is in dark green light while the singer is brightly illuminated, indicating that he is in the spotlight. The stage they are playing on appears to be quite large, so they must be quite a successful band.

This photo shows a dance crew performing in a town square or some open space like that. They are all wearing matching white tee shirts, but it is impossible to see what is written on the tee shirts. All but one of the dancers are wearing black jeans. Maybe he found it too hot for jeans! Behind them is some kind of display or booth. Maybe the dance crew is raising awareness around an issue or they are trying to sell something.

In this photo, we see a woman golfer. She has just finished hitting the ball, and she is following through with her swing and watching the flight of her ball. Her attire suggests that she is a serious player. She is wearing a glove to give her better grip on her golf club, and she is wearing a visor to keep the sun out of her eyes. There also appears to be a scorebook in her back pocket, which is what professional golfers do.
