How to Read the Score Table

Each row shows a single IELTS band and the TOEFL range it matches. For example, IELTS 7.0 matches TOEFL 91 to 99 on the 0 to 120 scale, which is about 4.5 to 5 on the 1 to 6 scale.

The chart is based on the results of nearly 1,000 people who took both tests in 2023 to 2024. Your real result on the other test may be a few points higher or lower than the chart shows.

Where the Data Comes From

The IELTS to TOEFL iBT chart (0 to 120 column) comes from a 2025 joint study by the IELTS Partners (British Council, IDP, Cambridge) and ETS, who make the TOEFL test. The two test providers worked together to compare scores from 937 people who took both tests. You can read the full report on the IELTS research page or on the ETS research report.

The 1 to 6 column is the new TOEFL iBT total score system from ETS. We use ETS's official 1 to 6 to 0 to 120 conversion to add the new scale to this chart. You can see ETS's full conversion table on the ETS TOEFL iBT score scale update page.

How Accurate Is This Score?

Score conversions are close, but not exact. Your real result on the other test may fall outside the matching range shown in the chart by a few points. The chart is most accurate at IELTS 5.5 to 7.5, where most test takers score.

Use the result as a strong guide, not a promise. If you need an exact score for your school or visa, check which tests they accept.

Should I Take the IELTS or TOEFL?

IELTS and TOEFL are both used for university entry and visas. IELTS is more often used in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. TOEFL is more often used in the United States. Many schools accept both. Check the rules for your country and school before you pick.
