Major Updates to the Duolingo English Test

On 2 April, 2024 some big changes came to the DET!

1. New "Interactive Writing" question

A new writing question is being added. You will be given a prompt and you have 5 minutes to write about it. After you respond to that prompt, you will then be given a second prompt. You will have 3 minutes to respond to this second prompt. The second prompt will be related to the first prompt.

2. No more "Read, Then Write" question type

The new "Interactive Writing" question replaces the "Read, Then Write" question type.

3. New scoring criteria for writing and speaking questions

Duolingo did not announce these changes, but you definitely still need to know about them!

4. New "Fill in the Blanks" question type

This new question type is similar to the "Read and Complete" question type, except you will be given only 1 sentence and 1 word that you have to complete.

5. New "Read and Select" format

Until now, each "Read and Select" question had around 15 words and you had to select the real English words among them. It used to look like this:

But starting on 2 April, 2024, each "Read and Select" question will contain just one word:

6. New question frequencies

Duolingo has also changed how frequently some questions appear on the test. Here are the new question frequencies:
