  2. Visit the admissions page for that university specifically to see their language proficiency requirements.
  3. Contact the school admissions committee directly to see if they accept the Duolingo English Test for the language proficiency requirement.

When can I take the Duolingo English Test in India in 2024?

Many students located in India wonder when they can take the Duolingo English Test. Luckily, the answer is that you can take the Duolingo English Test in India anytime, anywhere. This is because the Duolingo English Test is an online test that can be taken from home.

Does taking the Duolingo English Test cost more depending on where you take it?

Thankfully no – the Duolingo English Test costs the same, no matter which country you take it in.

Is Duolingo accepted for UK visas?

No. There are only 4 "secure English language tests (SELTs)" that the UK will accept for immigration visas. Unfortunately, the Duolingo English Test (DET) is not yet one of them.

The main reason is presumably that you take the DET from home, so the UK government doesn't consider it "secure." However, after the massive IELTS cheating scandal we think that eventually the UK government will accept the DET too. Hopefully, it's soon!

Is Duolingo accepted for German visas?

There are three types of student visas available in Germany:

  • The Language Course Visa - for students participating in a German language course for 3 months to a year
  • Student Application Visa - for students who haven't found or been formally accepted into the right program yet
  • Student Visa - for those already accepted into a German institution

For visas that require "proof" of university admission, you will need to meet individual requirements of that institution, which sometimes involves demonstrating English Proficiency. This is important to check because most schools in Germany are taught in German rather than English!

If classes are taught fully or partially in English, you will need to check that that university accepts the Duolingo English Test and their minimum score requirements, which usually fall between 105 and 120. If courses are taught partially or fully in German, then you will need to take a German proficiency test instead! The good news is that, increasingly, after COVID-19, German schools have accepted the Duolingo English Test as it allows students to take the test from anywhere.

Again, visa requirements mean that students must demonstrate their German language proficiency for German or mixed courses and English language proficiency for English or mixed courses.  Unfortunately, to demonstrate English proficiency for the visa, the TOEFL or IELTS is required rather than the Duolingo English Test. A TOEFL score of 550 points for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, and 79-89 for the internet-based based OR an IELTS test score of 5-6.5 is needed.
