Each row shows a single DET score and the TOEFL iBT range it matches. For example, DET 120 matches TOEFL 87 to 92, and DET 130 matches TOEFL 98 to 103.
The chart is based on the average results of people who took both tests. Your real result on the other test may be a few points higher or lower than the chart shows. When a school asks for a TOEFL score of 100, a DET score of 130 or higher is a strong match.
The DET to TOEFL iBT (0 to 120) chart comes from Duolingo. You can find it on the official DET scores page. To build this chart, Duolingo collected scores from people who had taken both tests and compared them.
The TOEFL iBT 1 to 6 scale is the new TOEFL scoring system from ETS. We use ETS's official 1 to 6 to 0 to 120 conversion to add the new scale to this chart. You can see ETS's full conversion table on the ETS TOEFL iBT score scale update page.
Duolingo updates the chart when the test changes (for example, new question types or new scoring). The table above uses the most recent version. We also show the CEFR level for each score to give more context.
Score conversions are close, but not exact. Your real result on the other test may fall outside the matching range shown in the chart by a few points. At very low and very high scores, the chart is less exact because fewer people score there.
Use the result as a strong guide, not a promise. If you need an exact TOEFL iBT score for your school, check if the school accepts DET scores too. Many schools now do.
The DET and TOEFL iBT are different tests. The DET is short (about 1 hour), cheaper, and fully online. Most U.S. universities accept it. TOEFL iBT is longer (about 2 hours), more expensive, and can be taken at home or at a test center. TOEFL is accepted at more than 12,000 universities in over 160 countries.
To see which schools and countries accept the DET, see our guide: Duolingo English Test Acceptance by Country.
