Cleveland State University Duolingo Requirements

Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio is one of over 2,520 USA colleges that accept the Duolingo English Test.

International students can attend Cleveland State University by applying for undergraduate, graduate, ESL, and non-degree studies.

Undergraduate Students

International undergraduate applicants must demonstrate English Proficiency in one of the following ways:

• TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based) score of 78 and at least 17 in each section
• TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based) score of 550
• IELTS score of 6.0 and at least 5.0 in each section
• PTE (Pearson Test of English) score of 50
• iTEP score of 3.8
• ACT English Score of 20
• SAT Critical Reading Score of 470
• Successful completion of Cleveland State Universities' Intensive English language Program Advanced Level with a grade of 80%+
• Completion of English language studies (Level 112) from any of the ELS Language Centers
• Successful completion of 30 semester credit hours of college-level coursework from an accredited college in the United States or English-speaking country with a cumulative 2.0 GPA, including the equivalent of Cleveland State Universities' ENG 101 and ENG 102 with a grade of C or better. Course equivalency will be determined during the application process.

International students at Cleveland State University are placed automatically into one of the tracks below to help them adjust to academic life.

For the "Academic Accelerator Program", a GPA of 2.0 is required alongside a TOEFL score of 68 (with no subscore below 14), IELTS of 5.5 (with no score below 5.0), or iTEP of 3.5 (with no score below 3.0).

For the "Academic English" track, a GPA of 2.5 is required with a TOEFL score below 50, IELTS at 4.5, and iTEP below 2.5

For the "International Direct" track a GPA of 2.3 is required alongside a TOEFL score of 78 (with no part below 17), IELTS of 6.0 (with no score below 5.0 accepted), or iTEP of 3.8.

For the "UStart" track a GPA of 1.5 is required alongside an IELTS score of 6.0 (with no score below 5.0 accepted).

For the "UStart" second track, a GPA of 1.5 is required with an IELTS score of 5.5 (no score below 5.0 is accepted).

Please note - UStart is a preparatory program for international students who do not yet meet specific academic/English proficiency requirements for USA study.

Graduate Students

Students must score one of the following to meet English proficiency requirements:

• TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based) - 78 and at least 17 in each section
• TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based) - 550
• IELTS - 6.0 and at least 5.0 in each section
• Duolingo English Test - 100
• PTE (Pearsons Test of English) - 50
• iTEP - 3.8
• Successful completion of Cleveland State University's Intensive English Language Program (IELP) Advanced Level with a grade of 80%+
• Completion of English language studies (Level 112) from any ELS Language Center
• Graduated from a secondary school or accredited college/university in the US or from a TOEFL exempted country

⭐ For the College of Engineering a TOEFL (iBT) score of 78 is required with a reading score of 20, a listening score of 21, a writing score of 17, and a speaking score of 20 minimum.  

ESL/IELP Students

Students are recommended to provide information about past courses they have passed from another school if they are transferring. If they are not transferring, the official website suggests providing the following test scores at a minimum for the Intensive English Language Program (IELP):

• iBT (internet-based TOEFL) with a 42 overall
• IELTS 4.5 score overall
• ITEP Academic 2.9 overall
• Duolingo English Test score of 60

These scores will also help to determine which level of the course you will be enrolled in.

Non-degree Students

Students who are studying on a short-term J-1 Exchange Visitors visa will need to provide one of the following:

• TOEFL Paper-Based score minimum equals 550
• TOEFL Internet-based score minimum equals 78; with a minimum sub-score of 17 in each section
• IELTS score minimum equals 6.0
• ITEP score minimum equals 3.8
• PTE (Pearsons Test of English) 50
• ACT English Score 20
• Old SAT Critical Reading Score  Before March 1, 2016) 470
• New SAT Reading Test Score (After March 1, 2016) 26

Students who will study on a "reciprocal exchange agreement" must provide scores from the past two years, unless they are from a TOEFL-exempt country.

In summary, the Duolingo English Test is accepted for Graduate and ELS studies rather than undergraduate studies at Cleveland State University. Further, DET scores should be 100+ for admission to graduate studies and 60+ for the ESL course.
