University of Texas at Dallas Duolingo Requirements

Undergraduate Admissions

All international students from non-native English-speaking countries and/or attended secondary or post-secondary institutions outside the USA must meet English Proficiency Requirements in one of the following ways:

• Attended 3+ years at a US high school and graduated/will graduate
• Is from a country whose government language is English and education has been solely in English
• Score 560+ on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Section of the SAT
• Scored 21+ on the English section of the ACT
• Completed an academic associated degree from a Texas college AND completed the equivalent of ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302 (obtaining B or better in both classes) AND completed core coursework
• Completed 42 or more transferable credit hours from a US institution AND completed the equivalent of ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302, obtaining a B or better in both classes AND achieving a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.

If none of the above applies, students will need to take one of the following tests:

• The Duolingo English Test - scoring 105+ (with no minimums for subscores)
• IELTS - 6.5
• Completion of Level 112 at an ELS Language Center with a "Pass"
• PTE - 67
• TOEFL iBT (Internet Based) including the Home and Paper Edition - scoring 80+

Graduate Admissions

Graduate admissions to the University of Texas are similar but slightly different!

If your native language is not English and you were educated outside the US, you must demonstrate your English proficiency by:

• Having a bachelor's or master's degree (or equivalent) earned through instruction and examination in English
• Having a native country that's primary language is English according to UT Dallas's criteria

If you do not meet these requirements, you will need to take one of the following tests:

• Completion of Level 112 at an ELS Language Center, submitted by mail
• Duolingo English Test - scoring 105+
• International English Language Testing System, Academic (IELTS) - 6.5
• Pearson Test of English, Academic with a minimum score of 67
• Test of English as a Foreign Language iBT (Internet-based test) or TOEFL - scoring 80+
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) IBT (including the Home Edition and Paper Edition) - scoring 80+

These tests must have been taken less than 2 years prior.

So, as you can see a minimum score of 105 is required on the Duolingo English Test for graduate or undergraduate admission to the University of Texas Dallas. This is definitely achievable given the average score for 2022 was 108!
